Hugo De Groote Bernard Munyua Jacob Ricker-Gilbert (2022, [Dataset])
This file contains the data from a survey conducted with 122 respondents, found drying maize in open air along the roads in the towns and urban centers of major maize growing areas of Kenya (Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu and Nakuru) and Nairobi. Most of them were maize traders, but there were also some farmers and a few millers. They were interviewed on the technical aspects (drying methods, equipment and labor used, volumes handled and duration) and economic aspects (cost of buying and drying maize, buying and selling price) of their maize trading and drying practices. From each participant, two maize samples were taken at the different stages in the drying process (freshly purchased maize, maize in the process of drying, and completely dried maize ready to be shipped) and the moisture content measured.
43rd Elite Selection Wheat Yield Trial
Ravi Singh Carolina Saint Pierre (2023, [Dataset])
The Elite Selection Wheat Yield Trial (ESWYT) is a replicated yield trial that contains spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) germplasm adapted to Mega-environment 1 (ME1) which represents the optimally irrigated, low rainfall areas. Major stresses include leaf, stem and yellow rusts, Karnal bunt, and lodging. Representative areas include the Gangetic Valley (India), the Indus Valley (Pakistan), the Nile Valley (Egypt), irrigated river valleys in parts of China (e.g. Chengdu), and the Yaqui Valley (Mexico). This ME encompasses 36 million hectares spread primarily over Asia and Africa between 350S -350N latitudes. White (amber)-grained types are preferred by consumers of wheat in the vast majority of the areas. It is distributed to upto 200 locations and contains 50 entries.

Applying the difference-in-difference (DID) estimation procedure, this study quantifies the wheat blast (Magnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum) induced losses in wheat yield, quantity of wheat sold, consumed, or stored, as well as wheat grain value in Bangladesh in 2016 following a disease outbreak that affected over 15,000 hectares. Estimates show that the blast-induced yield loss was 540 kg ha-1 on average for households in the blast-affected districts. Estimated total wheat production loss was approximately 8,205 tons worth USD 2.1 million following the outbreak. Based on these insights, we discuss the need for long-term assured investment and concerted research efforts in controlling transboundary diseases such as wheat blast, including the importance of weather-forecast driven early warning systems and the dissemination of blast-resistant varieties.
Wheat Blast Data for seven CIMMYT wheat nurseries during the 2022 cropping cycle
Pawan Singh Xinyao He Maria Itria Ibba (2023, [Dataset])
Wheat head blast index (%) data for seven CIMMYT nurseries (12HPAN, 13HLBSN, 13HZAN, 38SAWSN, 52IDSN, 53IBWSN, 54IBWSN) is presented. Field trials took place in Quirusillas and Okinawa (Bolivia) and Jashore (Bangladesh) during the 2022 cycles. Two sowings were made in each location/cycle.

When genomic selection (GS) is used in breeding schemes, data from multiple generations can provide opportunities to increase sample size and thus the likelihood of extracting useful information from the training data. The Sparse Selection Index (SSI), is is a method for optimizing training data selection. The data files provided with this study include a large multigeneration wheat dataset of grain yield for 68,836 lines generated across eight cycles (years) as well as genotypic data that were analyzed to test this method. The results of the analysis are published in the corresponding journal article.
53rd International Durum Screening Nursery
Karim Ammar Carolina Saint Pierre (2022, [Dataset])
International Durum Screening Nursery (IDSN) distributes diverse CIMMYT-bred spring durum wheat germplasm adapted to irrigated and variable moisture stressed environments. Disease resistance and high industrial pasta quality are essential traits possessed in this germplasm. It is distributed to 100 locations, and contains 150 entries.
29th Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trial
Ravi Singh Carolina Saint Pierre (2022, [Dataset])
The Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trial (SAWYT) is a replicated yield trial that contains spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) germplasm adapted to low rainfall, drought prone environments typically receiving less than 500 mm of water available during the cropping cycle. The combination of water-use efficiency and water responsive broad adaptation plus yield potential is important in drought environments where rainfall is frequently erratic across and within years. Stripe rust, leaf rust and stem rust, root rots, nematodes, and bunts are the key biotic constraints. Typical target environments include winter rain or Mediterranean-type drought associated with post-flowering moisture stress and heat stress such as those found at Aleppo (Syria), Settat (Morocco) and Marcos Juarez (Argentina), all classified by CIMMYT within Wheat Mega Environment 4 (Low rainfall, semi-arid environment; ME4: SA). It is distributed to 150 locations, and contains 50 entries.
2022 CIMMYT Maize Eastern Africa Product Profile 3 Product Announcement
Dagne Wegary Gissa Yoseph Beyene Suresh L.M. Manje Gowda Walter Chivasa Aparna Das Prasanna Boddupalli (2022, [Dataset])
New and improved maize hybrids, developed by the CIMMYT Global Maize Program, are available for uptake by public and private sector partners, especially those interested in marketing or disseminating hybrid maize seed across upper altitudes of Eastern Africa and similar agro-ecologies in other regions. Following a rigorous trialing and a stage-gate advancement process culminating in the 2021 Stage 5 trials, CIMMYT advanced a total of 1 new elite maize hybrid for highlands in Eastern Africa in 2022. Phenotypic data collected in Stage 4 and Stage 5 trials for the selected hybrid as well as information about the trial sites are provided in this dataset. These trials were conducted through a network of partners, including NARS and private seed companies, in Eastern Africa under various management and environmental conditions.
Striga presence in Africa: Historic data from different sources
Hugo De Groote Jonne Rodenburg Marc Cotter (2022, [Dataset])
Combines presence data of Striga hermonthica and Striga asiatica on different crops from four different sources, obtained from online publications or authors.
32ND High Rainfall Wheat Screening Nursery
Ravi Singh Carolina Saint Pierre (2022, [Dataset])
CIMMYT annually distributes improved germplasm developed by its researchers and partners in international nurseries trials and experiments. The High Rainfall Wheat Screening Nursery (HRWSN) contains spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) germplasm adapted to high rainfall areas (Mega-environment 2).
