The WYCYT international nurseries are the result of research conducted to raise the yield potential of spring wheat through the strategic crossing of physiological traits related to source and sink potential in wheat. These trials have been phenotyped in the major wheat-growing mega environments through the International Wheat Improvement Network (IWIN) and the Cereal System Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) network, which included a total of 136 environments (site-year combinations) in major spring wheat-growing countries such as Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Mexico, Nepal, and Pakistan.

Ideas for modernizing maize and bean value chains in Kenya and Ethiopia: results from a brief survey

The development of relatively sophisticated actors along the agricultural value chains is an important precursor for agricultural development. In staple crop value chains for example, innovations around warehouse receipting and collateralization can enable farmers to successfully engage in temporal and spatial arbitrage, thereby opening opportunities to improve producer prices and expanding market horizons and creating greater market opportunities for rural households. This study summarizes the results of a market survey conducted in Eastern and Western Kenya as well as the major maize and legume markets in Ethiopia to identify key indicators of modernizing maize and legume markets in those countries. Using data from a market survey of 275 and 106 maize and /or legume traders in Ethiopia and Kenya respectively, evidence of modernization was summarized in terms of the following parameters. The existence of impersonal exchange, contract-based transactions, price information systems, standardization and quality differentiation. The survey finds that most maize and legume markets do not rely on contractual arrangements, formal price systems, do not have credit facilities to farmers and have no universal quality standardization. Two main gaps were identified. The need for formal price information systems based on widely accepted quality definitions and the needto develop the infrastructure for auxiliary services such as credit, forward sales, transportation and grading among others. On future research, empirical analyses should focus on determining the key financial, efficiency and development gains in such measures as standardized grades and quality, contracting and vertically integration.

15th Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trial

The Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trial (SAWYT) is a replicated yield trial that contains spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) germplasm adapted to low rainfall, drought prone environments typically receiving less than 500 mm of water available during the cropping cycle. The combination of water-use efficiency and water responsive broad adaptation plus yield potential is important in drought environments where rainfall is frequently erratic across and within years. Stripe rust, leaf rust and stem rust, root rots, nematodes, and bunts are the key biotic constraints. Typical target environments include winter rain or Mediterranean-type drought associated with post-flowering moisture stress and heat stress such as those found at Aleppo (Syria), Settat (Morocco) and Marcos Juarez (Argentina), all classified by CIMMYT within Wheat Mega Environment 4 (Low rainfall, semi-arid environment; ME4: SA). It is distributed to 150 locations, and contains 50 entries.
